Founded by engineers (Hisashige Tanaka and Ichisuke Fujioka), Toshiba is a global leader in home appliances and innovative climate technology with more than 112 locations and partners in 40 countries - a brand name firmly established among the world's largest corporations.
Hisashige Tanaka, known as “Asia’s Thomas Edison”, founder of Tanaka Engineering Works – introduced many innovations including light source, spring clocks, steam locomotives, steamboats and cannons.
Ichisuke Fujioka – the “father of electronics” in Japan, was the first in the country to organize mass production of incandescent light bulbs.
In 1899, the first company producing light electric equipment in Japan – Tokyo Electric Company – was established.
In 1939, through the merger of two large enterprises, Tokyo Shibaura Electric Company, known to the world as Toshiba, was born.
In 1978 it officially changes its name to Toshiba Corporation.
